Confessions of a Self-Reader: How I Built an Incredible Indie Oracle & Tarot Collection for Under $25 a Deck

Let’s be entirely honest for a second: indie oracle and tarot decks are breathtaking. The art, the card stock, the indie energy—it’s unmatched. As someone who deeply respects the tarot community, I always want to support creators.

But here is my reality: I am a self-reader. I don’t read for clients, I don’t have a monetized side hustle, and I don't use my cards to make money. Because my practice is entirely personal, spending $50 to $80+ on a single indie deck just isn't sustainable for my budget.

If you've ever felt "deck-buying guilt" for not paying full retail price, this is your sign to let it go. You can love indie decks, appreciate the artists, and still protect your wallet. By being patient and knowing where to look, I managed to snag an entire haul of gorgeous indie decks—including creations by Ethony, Tara Porter, and Cosmic Valeria—for $25 or less each.

Here is exactly how I built this dream collection on a budget.

The Amazon Sale Jackpot: Ethony Decks for Under $15

Usually, major retailers aren't the place to look for true independent decks. But every now and then, creators run brilliant independent sales directly through their Amazon storefronts. That is exactly how I scored these two heavy hitters from Ethony:

  • Modern Goddess Oracle: This 49-card deck is packed with empowering archetypes for the metaphysical reader.

  • The Awakened Soul Oracle: A beautifully atmospheric deck perfect for deep, introspective work.

The Price Tag: I managed to grab both of these directly from Ethony's Amazon store while they were on sale for less than $15 each! It felt amazing to buy them brand new while supporting the creator's official storefront directly without breaking the bank.

The eBay Thrift Hunt: Indie Treasures for Under $25

For the rest of my collection, I turned to my absolute favorite marketplace for secondhand magic: eBay.

A lot of people buy indie decks, realize the artwork or energy doesn't quite resonate with them, and look to rehome them. Their loss is a budget-conscious self-reader's gain! Here are the incredible indie treasures I scooped up on eBay, all for less than $25 a piece:

  • Solace Oracle: Healing with Pendulum by Tara Porter – A hauntingly beautiful, raw, charcoal-style indie deck that brings an entirely unique energy to readings.

  • Shine From The Inside Oracle by Brittney Carmichael & Jena Kane – Pure pastel joy and positive reinforcement, perfect for daily morning pulls.

  • The Moon Deck by Aarona Leá & Andrea Keh – A beloved, minimalist ritual deck focused on intuition and self-love.

  • Moon Witch Tarot by Cosmic Valeria – A gorgeous, witchy, and deeply aesthetic indie tarot deck that usually commands a premium price tag online.

Finding the Balance Between Supporting Creators and Being Realistic

The Self-Reader's Manifesto: You do not need to bankrupt yourself to have a meaningful, beautiful spiritual practice.

There is often a lot of gatekeeping in the tarot community around buying indie decks. We are told we must buy the first-edition, full-price Kickstarter release to be "true" supporters. But the truth is, buying a deck secondhand on eBay still keeps that deck in circulation, gives it a loving home, and prevents it from ending up in a landfill. And when creators host their own massive sales on platforms like Amazon? That is a golden opportunity to support them directly within your budget.

If you are reading purely for yourself, be patient, set up your eBay alerts, and watch for official author sales. You can curate a soulful, high-vibe collection of independent art without sacrificing your financial peace of mind.
