If you've recently downloaded Noteful on your iPad, you already know it’s one of the fastest, slickest note-taking and digital planning apps available. But beyond basic handwriting, Noteful is packed with hidden gems and power features that make digital planning and studying seamless.
Whether you’re setting up a digital planner, annotating lecture PDFs, or organizing your life, here are the most useful tutorials and tips to help you master Noteful.
1. Level Up Your Layout with Layers
The Layers system is Noteful’s absolute superpower, functioning similarly to design software like Photoshop or Procreate.
How to use it: Tap the Layers icon in the top menu bar to create, hide, lock, or rearrange layers.
Pro Tip: Keep your base PDF or decorative digital stickers on Layer 1 and write your handwritten notes on Layer 2. When you use the eraser or lasso tool to move your writing, your background stickers and planner grids will remain perfectly untouched!
2. Instant Hyperlink Navigation (No Toggling Required!)
If you use hyperlinked digital planners or massive textbooks, Noteful handles links better than almost any other note-taking app.
Finger Tap (Default): Tap any hyperlinked tab or index button with your finger to jump instantly to that page—even while your pen tool is active.
Stylus Navigation: To prevent accidental jumps while writing with your Apple Pencil, long-press a hyperlink with the stylus to follow it or open its menu options.
3. Organize with Folders and Hashtags
Unlike apps that force you to choose between folders or tags, Noteful lets you use both.
How to use it: Type a hashtag anywhere in your text or document titles (e.g.,
#finance,#exams, or#recipes). Why it helps: You can keep a notebook saved inside a specific subject folder while using tags to cross-reference related pages across your entire library instantly from the left sidebar.
4. Ace Active Recall with the Tape Tool
Studying for exams or trying to memorize key terms? The built-in Tape Tool acts as an interactive cover for your notes.
Tutorial: Select the Tape Tool from your menu, choose a tape style or color, and drag it over text, terms, or diagram labels.
The Magic: Tap the tape strip anytime to reveal the hidden text underneath, then tap it again to re-cover it for self-quizzing!
5. Customize & Move Your Workspace Toolbar
Noteful gives you total freedom over your interface layout.
How to move it: Tap the three-dots menu (...) in the top corner of your workspace to dock your main toolbar to the Top, Bottom, Left, or Right side of your screen. Left-handed users love placing the toolbar on the right side to prevent accidental palms taps!
6. Build Your Custom Sticker Library
You don't need to keep opening separate image files every time you want to decorate your pages.
Tutorial: Tap the Sticker Tool (star icon) > tap + Add > create a New Collection.
Bulk Import: Select Import from Files or Photos and batch-select your favorite PNG sticker files. They will permanently save into your toolbar panel for quick drag-and-drop access anytime!
Quick Pro-Tips Checklist
Lock Images: Select imported images and choose Lock from the menu to prevent them from moving around while you write over them.
Audio Recording Sync: Tap the microphone icon while taking lecture notes. When playing back the audio later, your notes will highlight in real-time as the audio plays!
Natural Pen Engine: Try the InfiniteStroke brush engines in pen settings to fine-tune ink smoothness and pressure sensitivity for clean handwriting.
